Bauhinia galpinii

Bauhinia galpinii
This South African shrub is one which could easily have the tag "tough as old boots" attached to it.
It can form a dense foliage mass 5 metres by 5 metres even in quite inhospitable spots. One such specimen grows in the shadow of the Steelworks here in Wollongong. The flowers which are produced in great quantity at this time of year are usually described as brick-red in colour. An apt description no doubt but maybe not a flattering one.
This Bauhinia is suitable as a hedge plant and could be kept to a respectable 2 metre height.. Specimens which get out of hand can be given severe pruning even with a chainsaw to no ill effect.
2017 update: I currently don't have any stock but do grow it from time to time.
