Piper sarmentosum, Betel Pepper
This ground cover/ perennial pepper is native to Thailand and Vietnam. The glossy ovate leaves are produced in abundance during summer after spending the cooler months in a semi dormant state.
Tiny white spiked flowers appear at this time of year, as well as long shoots which send down roots when they touch the ground.
The leaves are edible being pungent and spicy tasting They can be used as a "wrap", and by filling the centre of the leaf with finely diced prawns, ginger, peanuts, shallots and lime they make an excellent snack for your next barbecue.
